London Liming

We host the acclaimed ‘Liming’ events, which fuse spoken word and music performances with a Caribbean carnival sensibility. We have produced over twenty ‘London Liming' events since 2004 at venues ranging from the GE Club (Great Eastern Hotel), the Southbank Centre, the Tabernacle in Notting Hill, Kings Place, the British Library and Rich Mix, the latter which developed into a two-year residency at the East London venue.

Acclaimed Guyanese poet and Tilt's patron, John Agard, gives a characteristically eloquent lesson in 'liming' (noun and verb) before his performance at Tilt's London Liming: Independence! special at Rich Mix

Liming on tour

In putting together liming events, we felt that introducing a carnival sensibility was one of the best ways to introduce newcomers to literature and spoken word. It offers a convivial and welcoming environment that helps to encourage a range of audiences to try it out.

Our Liming on Tour took the spoken word party and the cosmopolitan vibe of Trinidad 'liming' culture to each venue we travelled to – offering short tasters of Poetry, Fiction and Spoken Word, interspersed with Soca, Brazilian, Reggae, Hi-Life and dance tunes played by our house DJs including Charlie Dark and Psykhomantus.

We toured to Liverpool, Nottingham, Leicester, Ilkley, Sheffield, and a special showcase at Bestival in the Isle of Wight.

"I was impressed by the mix of performers.  I think these evenings are a great way for people to find out about new writers who they might not otherwise come across.  You may come for one author and discover a whole new range of talent.  I did."  Undercover magazine
